The five stages of a CBT test

Every CBT follows the same DVSA-set structure, wherever in the country you take it. Here's what to expect on the day at a provider in Sitemap:

1. Eyesight check & introductionRead a numberplate at 20 metres, then a safety briefing — around 30 minutes.
2. Learn the controlsGet familiar with the bike or scooter off-road first — roughly 45 minutes.
3. Practical ridingBasic manoeuvres in a controlled area: 2–3 hours depending on how quickly it clicks.
4. Road safety talkHighway Code essentials specific to riding — around 45 minutes.
5. On-road ridingA minimum of 2 hours riding on real roads with your instructor nearby.

Preparing for your CBT test in Sitemap

A little preparation goes a long way. If you've ridden a bicycle on the road before, that road sense usually transfers well — instructors in Sitemap often find riders with cycling experience pick up bike control faster.

On the day, you'll start in a controlled area using cones and similar aids before moving on to the roads around Sitemap for the final, on-road part of the test. Fully qualified instructors stay with you throughout — if anything feels unclear, ask; that's what they're there for. Pass, and you'll get a DL196 certificate valid for two years, letting you ride up to 125cc with L-plates. Need more practice first?
